I guess I have always given alot of thought to what people are really trying to do when they speak. At a young age I learned very quickly that even the people closest to you can let you down. It made me very careful and attentive. It made me a good judge of character. It made me somwhat guarded. It really made me examine what others say.
I'm not going to be a teacher, but no matter what media field I enter I will always be in the business of selling myself and my skills. There are so many people looking for a handful of jobs that it often comes down to who you know. Getting your name out there with a positive message is crucial. In the movie business, you may be convincing someone to fund your project. In news or sports writing, you are convincing the reader that you and your publication are the best and most reliable source of information.

I totally agree with you! I posted a comment to Meredith's blog about ad executives... they would have to be educated in this rhetoric, logos, ethos, pathos ideas to create ads to appeal to each and every one of these ideas in the consumer, otherwise, they would not be good at what they do: Coming up with marketing strategies to convice us that we logically need their over-priced product! Just about any job market out there requires the abilty to appeal to another on at least one of those 3 dimensions.
ReplyDeleteThis is off the topic, but I think you should definately seek a job in radio... you have a really awesome "radio voice". Think about it! =)
Wow... that blog response was full of grammatical errors. Sad that I am an English major... ha ha!
ReplyDeleteI think its great that you have become a good judge of character based on what you have been through at a young age. And I agree, getting a good job has a lot to do with who you know. But I think that if you have the power to persuade someone in a good way, a possible employer will remember you over someone who they are forced to recognize. The power of persuasion is very real.
